Norfolk Sports Club Announces Scholarship RecipientsThe Norfolk Sports Club awarded 22 scholarships to outstanding student athletes throughout Hampton Roads. Included is a brief Brief History of the Named Scholarships: James G. Parke - A golf scholarship established in 1965 by Roy R. Charles in memory of a Past President (1955) of the NSC. Awarded this year to Jacob N. Lambeth. Graduate of Salem High and is headed to Virginia Tech. Roy R. Charles - Established in 1977 in honor of a long devoted member of the NSC and awarded annually to a student with a high GPA. Awarded this year to Matthew C. Cavano. Matthew is a graduate of Western Branch High School and is headed to Virginia Tech. Pete & Bess Decker/TowneBank - Established in 2007 and awarded to an outstanding student athlete. This year's recipient is Stephanie Lodie of I. C. Norcom High School and is headed to UVA. Tim Timmons - Established in 1987 in honor of the first and long time treasurer of the Scholarship Foundation and a dedicated member of the NSC. Awarded to a recipient most involved in school and community activities. This year's recipient is Stephanie C. Flom. Stephanie is a graduate of Oscar Smith High School and is headed to Longwood. John A. & John J. Baecher - Established in 1988 by the Baecher family in honor of their grandfather and father. This year's recipient is Kelsey R. Host. Kelsey is a graduate of Norfolk Collegiate and is headed to UVA. Donald G. Griffin - Established in 1994 by long time dedicated NSC member and former principal of Granby High School and awarded annually to a Granby graduate. Calla M. Ward was this years recipient is headed to University of Richmond. James Hudgins - Established in 1995 by the Hudgins family in memory of their husband and father, a dedicated NSC member. Awarded to a graduating baseball player. This year's recipient is a repeat recipient Derrick L. West of I. C. Norcom High School and is headed back to VCU. William Litton - Established in 1995 in his memory and awarded to a graduating baseball player. This year's recipient is Otto Hughey 111 from B. T. Washington High School is headed to Norfolk State. Marty Brennaman - Established in 2001 in honor of his many contributions to the Tidewater area. Awarded to a Portsmouth High School graduate. This year's recipient is Bianca N. Baker of Wilson High School and is headed to Virginia Tech. Alfred E. Abiouness - Established in 2002 by the Abiouness family to honor their husband and father, a longtime NSC member. Awarded to a golfer from Norfolk Catholic High School or any local high school as qualification permits. This year's recipient is Kelly C. McAnally a repeat recipient of Landstown High School and is headed back to Longwood University. Past President's Award - Established in 2003 and awarded to an outstanding student athlete selected by a committee of Past Presidents was awarded to Jacqulyn M. McEntee of Landstown High School and headed to Virginia Tech. Eleven students were awarded the Norfolk Sports Club Scholarships. Jarryd V. Antolin from Lake Taylor High School is headed to Virginia Tech. Katherine L. Becker from Princess Anne High School is headed to University of Richmond. Antonio Cook from Lake Taylor High School is headed to James Madison University. Marlene S. Buda from Indian River High School is headed to ODU. Chelsey Marx from Princess Anne High School is a repeat reciepent and is headed back to VCU. Anastas Budagov from Norfolk Collegiate is a repeat recipient is headed back to George Mason University. Ryan C. Levis from Ocean Lakes High School is headed to UVA. Karen E. Pearce from Green Run High School is headed to Radford University. Kristen M. Robertson from Granby High School is headed to ODU. Tanisha S. Robinson a repeat recipeint from Norview High School is headed back to Norfolk State. Kristin N. Sachs a repeat recipient from Western Branch High School is headed back to James Madison University. Each of the recipients received $2300 from the Norfolk Sports Club. The Norfolk Sports Club Scholarship Foundation was established in 1950 and one scholarship of $250 was awarded. In the past thirteen years (1990-2002), a total of 290 students have received $619,000 in scholarships. During the entire 53 year period of scholarship awards, over $1,000,000 in financial support has been provided to 444 student athletes. | Brief History of the Named Scholarships |
James G. Parke - A golf scholarship established in 1965 by Roy R. Charles in memory of a Past President (1955) of the NSC.
Roy R. Charles - Established in 1977 in honor of a long devoted member of the NSC and awarded annually to a student with a high GPA.
Tim Timmons - Established in 1987 in honor of the first and long time treasurer of the Scholarship Foundation and a dedicated member of the NSC. Awarded to a recipient most involved in school and community activities.
John A. & John J. Baecher - Established in 1988 by the Baecher family in honor of their grandfather and father. It is awarded to a graduate of Maury High School.
David Paul Weir - Established in 1992 by the mac Weir family in memory of their son, David. It is awarded annually to a graduate of Cox or Western Branch High School.
Donald G. Griffin - Established in 1994 by long time dedicated NSC member and former principal of Granby High School and awarded annually to a Granby graduate.
James Hudgins - Established in 1995 by the Hudgins family in memory of their husband and father, a dedicated NSC member. Awarded to a graduating baseball player from Cox or First Colonial High School.
William Litton - Established in 1995 in his memory and awarded to a graduating baseball player.
