Norfolk Sports Club Announces 2011 Scholarship Recipients- (2011)The Norfolk Sports Club awarded 17 scholarships to outstanding student athletes throughout Hampton Roads. Included is a brief Brief History of the Named Scholarships: James G. Parke - A golf scholarship established in 1965 by Roy R. Charles in memory of a Past President (1955) of the NSC. This year's recipient is Kevin Andrew Radford. Kevin is a graduate of Maury High School and is headed to UVA. Roy R. Charles - Established in 1977 in honor of a long devoted member of the NSC and awarded annually to a student with a high GPA. This year's recipient is Jena Shae O'Hara is a graduate of Princess Anne High School and is headed to Virginia Tech. Tim Timmons - Established in 1987 in honor of the first and long time treasurer of the Scholarship Foundation and a dedicated member of the NSC. Awarded to a recipient most involved in school and community activities. This year's recipient is Emily Rebecca Newman . Emily is a graduate of Indian River School and is headed UVA. Baecher Family - Established in 1988 by the Baecher family in honor of their grandfather and father, John A.and John J Baecher. It is awarded to Maury High School graduate. This year's recipient is Aneja Dyshir Kemp. Aneja is a graduate of Maury High School and is headed to ODU. Donald G. Griffin - Established in 1994 by long time dedicated NSC member and former principal of Granby High School and awarded annually to a Granby graduate. This year's recipient is Jenna Pham. Jenna a graduate of Tallwood High School and is headed to VCU. James Hudgins - Established in 1995 by the Hudgins family in memory of their husband and father, a dedicated NSC member. Awarded to a graduating baseball player. This year's recipient is David Vasquez, Jr. David is a graduate of First Colonial High School and is headed to Virginia Tech. William Litton - Established in 1995 in his memory and awarded to a graduating baseball player. This year's recipient is Trenton C. Litsch. Trenton is a graduate of Maury High School headed to UVA.. Alfred E. Abiouness - Established in 2002 by the Abiouness family to honor their husband and father, a longtime NSC member. Awarded to a golfer from Norfolk Catholic High School or any local high school as qualification permits. This year's recipient is Lauren E. Bator. Lauren is a graduate of Bishop Sullivan High School and is headed to UVA. Pete & Bess Decker/TowneBank-Established in 2007 and awarded to an outstanding student athlete. This year's recipient is Michael L. Chatman. Michael is a graduate Norview High School and is headed to ODU. Past President's Award - Established in 2003 and awarded to an outstanding student athlete selected by a committee of Past Presidents. This year's recipient was awarded Shane T. Stewart of Norview High School and headed to ODU. Seven students were awarded the Norfolk Sports Club Scholarships. BriAnn M. McLendon from DeepCreek High School is a repeat recipient and she is headed back to ODU Shantoya Evans a repeat recipient from Norview High School headed back to VCU. Lindsay Vellines a repeat recipient from Maury High School is headed to Virginia Tech. Jennifer L. Ware is a repeat recipient from Princess Anne High School and is headed back to William & Mary . Nicolas Leon from Bishop Sullivan High School is headed to Virginia Tech. Barlett R. Jones from Norview High School is headed to James Madison. Tiara D. Davis from Lake Taylor High School is headed to Norfolk State University. Each of the recipients (17) received $2,000 from the Norfolk Sports Club. The Norfolk Sports Club Scholarship Foundation was established in 1950 and one scholarship of $250 was awarded. In the past thirteen years (1990-2002), a total of 290 students have received $619,000 in scholarships. During the entire 53 year period of scholarship awards, over $1,000,000 in financial support has been provided to 444 student athletes. | Brief History of the Named Scholarships |
James G. Parke - A golf scholarship established in 1965 by Roy R. Charles in memory of a Past President (1955) of the NSC.
