The career of football’s original power running back began at Kansas University where John Riggins broke Gayle Sayers’ school rushing record and carried the Jayhawks to the 1968 Big 8 Conference Championship.        It was at the professional level that Riggins carved his niche as a hard working, fast running, dominant back.  Drafted by the New York Jets sixth overall in 1971, Riggins wasted no time making an impact – collecting  team MVP awards in 1972 and 1975, and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 1975 as well.  Riggins became the first New York Jet in team history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.     Riggins’ ten seasons with the Washington Redskins from 1976 – 1985 would prove to be the defining era in his professional football career.  As an “Honorary Hog,” Riggins rushed behind the famous offensive line in route to the Super Bowl XVII championship over the Miami Dolphins and selection as the game’s MVP.  “Riggo” and the Redskins returned to the Super Bowl the following year, but were defeated by the Los Angeles Raiders.     Riggins left not only a trail of defenses behind him, but a number of records as well.  Throughout his career, “Diesel” powered his way to 11,352 rushing yards (13th all-time) , 104 rushing touchdowns (6th all-time), and 12 touchdown receptions, placing him 13th on the all-time list for touchdowns scored.  He was the second player in NFL history to rush for over 100 touchdowns, and the first to reach the milestone since Jim Brown in 1965.  John Riggins was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992, cementing his legacy as one of the most dominant running backs in the history of football.  Riggins remains the Redskin’s only Super Bowl MVP to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
